RESEARCH & IMPACT

Overview

My research focuses on improving quality of life and quality of care for older adults through rigorous, person-centered, and policy-relevant research. I am particularly interested in understanding how systems, policies, and communities shape experiences of aging and influence equity in long-term services and supports. My work seeks not only to generate evidence but also to translate findings into meaningful changes in practice, policy, and care delivery.

“My work is grounded in the belief that aging is not a problem to be solved, but a stage of life to be supported with dignity, opportunity, and respect.”

—Tetyana P. Shippee

Four Principles That Guide My Research

Person-centered

Quality should reflect not only clinical outcomes but also what matters most to individuals and families.

Equity-focused

Experiences of aging and access to high-quality long-term services and supports differ across populations and communities.

Collaborative

Research is strengthened by engagement with older adults, families, providers, researchers, and community partners.

Action-oriented

Research findings should be translated into evidence that informs practice, systems, and policy.

Research and Community Partnerships

Partnerships are central to my research. I collaborate with government agencies, national organizations, providers, advocates, researchers, older adults, families, and people with lived experience to ensure that research addresses meaningful questions and produces evidence that can be used in policy and practice.

Government and Policy Partnerships

  • Minnesota Department of Human Services

    • I have a longstanding research partnership with the Minnesota Department of Human Services focused on improving quality measurement and public reporting in long-term services and supports. I serve as Principal Investigator of the University of Minnesota contract supporting the development and continued implementation of Minnesota’s Assisted Living Report Card, Minnesota Nursing Home Quality Measures, Alternative Care (AC) waiver, and other projects. [View Assisted Living Report Card Reports on the Resources page]

Community and Provider Partnerships

I partner with community organizations, older adults, families, advocates, and providers to ensure that research reflects the priorities of the people and communities that long-term care systems are intended to serve.

National Research and Policy Partnerships

I also collaborate with national research and policy organizations to develop quality measures, study variation across states and communities, and translate research findings into practical improvements in long-term services and supports.
